FISH brings emergency supplies of food staples to needy families in the New Haven area, concentrating on the inner city. With one paid employee, FISH is staffed and administered by volunteers.
Food is either donated through food drives (50%) or purchased at the Connecticut Food Bank (50%). Sorted and shelved, bagged and delivered by a staff of volunteers, bags of groceries (enough for 21 meals) are brought to homes in emergencies in response to telephone requests. Priority goes to the elderly, disabled, and others who cannot get to a soup kitchen or a walk-in pantry. Deliveries are made 7 days a week.
Funds come from individual donors, churches, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and several small grants.
